Every single year, New Orleans descends into a flurry of chaos, crowds, and colorful masks as the popular city celebrates Mardi Gras.
What the heck is Mardi Gras, you ask? Oh, you sweet summer child. It’s only the best holiday on the planet!
Also known as Fat Tuesday,Mardi Gras is celebrated around the globe as the last day of Carnival season, which starts right after Christmas, on January 6th. With Ash Wednesday marking the beginning of Lent (a 30 day period of fasting before Easter), Mardi Gras is essentially the “last hurrah” of sorts, with folks indulging in their favorite fatty foods and lots of booze before giving them up.
Hold up—booze?!
Yup! Like St. Patty’s Day and Cinco de Mayo, Mardi Gras is another drinking holiday. Except this time, with lots of beads, sequined masks, and elaborate costumes.
Plus, there’s a parade. And who doesn’t love a good parade?
Ah, the parade! The people of Bourbon Street don snazzy Mardi Gras attire, show off impressive face paint and pile on beads by the dozen. And did we mention the food? If you get the chance to experience Mardi Gras in New Orleans, you’re going to be eating tons of traditional dishes like gumbo, boiled crawfish, po’boys, beignets, and jambalaya. Mmmm!
However, that’s honestly no surprise seeing as the city is considered one of the best places to travel for good eats and unforgettable Insta-worthy brunches. That said, not everyone can make it to New Orleans.
So, kick it at home and attend a Mardi Gras parade in your own hometown, and nosh on ALL theKing Cake you can get your hands on. We’d say your Mardi Gras is still a resounding success (*snaps all around*). Just remember, beads, or it didn’t happen.
