It’s that joyous time of the year again! Everyone has a little extra pep in their step (orsashay, should we say) because June is the month of celebrating LGBTQ+ pride with love, rainbows, and a wardrobe that’s here to slay all day. Though Pride may look a little different this year with many states still promoting social distancing, that certainly doesn’t mean you still can’t dress up in your favorite colorful apparel, including t-shirts, tanks, socks, and more. Rock your most vibrant, rainbow-esque Pride makeup if you so choose!
In this article, we’ll explore some of the best Pride apparel for June to help you show your support and look nothing short of fabulous!
Though the origins of Pride Monthspan all the back to the 1950s, President Clinton officially made it “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month” in 2000. President Obama then took it a step further, making it a little more inclusive in 2011, calling it Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month. No matter what you call it, Pride Month has a rich history.
The sun isn’t the only thing that comes out in June (wink, wink)! Rainbow flags also start appearing just about everywhere you look, from corporate office windows and coffee shops to even your neighbors front yard.
But why June?
We march, shout, and dance through the streets of June with colorful rainbow flags trailing behind us not just for the sake of it being one of the warmer months of the year, allowing us to rock itty-bitty booty shorts and barely-there mesh crops -- although, it’s definitely a plus. We celebrate in the month of June to coincide with the catalyst of the Gay Liberation Movement that was known as the Stonewall Uprising. Not familiar with what transpired on this revolutionary day? We’ll tell you:
In the wee morning hours of June 28th, 1969, police raided a popular gay bar in New York City’s West Village,The Stonewall Inn, arresting patrons and forcing them into waiting police vehicles. You see, at the time, people that police perceived as men could be legally arrested for doing drag, and people that police perceived as women could also be arrested if they were found wearing anything less than three pieces of “feminine clothing.” Cops often raided bars to search for these so-called violations. But that specific summer’s night, something incredible happened -- the patrons of the bar --led by trans women and femmes of color -- fought back, starting the Stonewall Riots, which went on for days.
In 1970, just one year after the Stonewall Inn rebellion, thousands of LGBT New Yorkers gathered for the Christopher Street Liberation Day March along Sixth Ave from Greenwich Village to Central Park, chanting, “Say it clear, say it loud! Gay is good, gay is proud!” The success of the March inspired local organizers across the U.S. and around the globe to start their own LGBT marches.
Fast forward to a few decades later, the Stonewall Inn was declared a historic landmark by the City of New York in 2015 and later named a national monument by President Obama a year later.
In honor of Pride Month and all it stands for, we’ve come up with a few awesome ways you can show your love and support for this beautiful occasion. Whether you’re in the closet, out of the closet, or next to the closet -- get loud and be proud! Here are some of the best ways to celebrate:
If you happen to be well-versed with the LGBTQ community, use your profound knowledge for good. If you’re comfortable with speaking out,do it. Gay and trans jokes are not funny, and calling someone gay in a derogatory fashing is just flat-out homophobic. It's not cool, and it's not nice.
If you laugh or decide to do nothing about this kind of disgusting treatment, you’re also enabling unacceptable behavior. An ally helps to create safe environments for those they support. And although there are tons of different ways you can do this, one of the most proactive ways is to either help stop bullying and harassment or be there for others when it happens.
Due to social distancing still being practiced among many states around the nation, parades and parties are not as prevalent as they were prior to the coronavirus outbreak in 2019. But that’s okay because anLGBTQ movie night is a totally fun way to get in the spirit of Pride Month!
Whether you want to drop some knowledge on yourself or celebrate Pride, there is something for everyone out there looking for an LGBTQ-themed film.
Ever hear about Harvey Milk? Check outMilk. It’s a terrific and historically accurate movie about California’s first openly gay politician.
Rather watch something focused on the lesbian community? The L Word is a hit T.V. series that focuses on a powerful group of lesbian besties living in Los Angeles.
If you ask us, many transgender movies are total tearjerkers, butBoys Don’t Cryis an automatic classic and a must-see. For drag and some trans culture,Paris Is Burning is another great classic. But be warned -- this one also doesn’t necessarily have a super happy ending, but it’s an eye-opening documentary for sure.
Rather than pumping jams penned by Macklemore and Lady Gaga this Pride, consider seeking out queer artists who fly under the radar.
Is rap your genre? Check out Cakes Da Killa. Is spoken word more your style? Try Andrea Gibson. Looking for something totally different? Deborah Wheeler’s cynical sense of humor might be right up your alley!
